Last week, Ms. Galvez's Geometry classes went "Off the Grid," exploring mathematical concepts that challenged their problem-solving and teamwork skills.
Students utilized BreakoutEDU, an educational game-based learning platform that merges the thrill of escape rooms with academic challenges. They worked in small groups to solve puzzles and unlock five types of locks: key, 3-digit, 4-digit, directional, and shape locks.
In this activity, Geometry students received a fictional letter from a class that had gotten lost while learning about coordinate points and the coordinate plane. Their mission was to help the class return before time ran out. Each group was given a kit containing clues and artifacts, and they competed to be the first to unlock their box. The activity focused on math concepts like plotting and identifying coordinate points and made connections to the three undefined terms in Geometry: point, line, and plane.
After the game, the groups discussed what worked well and could be improved. Students highlighted the importance of communication, teamwork, and looking at clues from different perspectives. Although not all groups unlocked their box, everyone enjoyed the activity and expressed enthusiasm for this fun and interactive way to learn Geometry.
