Lower and Upper Campus art students are using shared themes and projects to explore how perspective can transform a flat page into a scene that feels alive.

This exploration starts as early as 2nd Grade, where students explore one-point perspective artwork as part of their introduction to perspective. In the "Fall Tree Perspective" lesson, they illustrate a worm's-eye view of a tree, as if looking up from the ground. By drawing trunks and branches that stretch upward, students make the trees appear both tall and close to the viewer. They then move on to creating collages of bats, layering cut paper to add vibrant contrast and dynamic movement. Through these foundational techniques, students develop skills they will continue to refine in later years.

In 7th Grade, students deepen their understanding of point of view during a six-week 2D Arts elective rotation dedicated to one-point perspective drawing. The course begins with an exploration of the history of perspective, focusing on its Renaissance origins and key terms, including the horizon line, orthogonal line, and vanishing point. Building on this, students design original cityscapes. With pencil and ruler, they construct buildings and streets on watercolor paper, guiding lines to a single point. After outlining in pen, students bring their work to life with watercolor paints, blending structure and personal expression.

At Sierra Canyon, the Arts ignite creativity and curiosity through a thoughtfully crafted, vertically aligned experience that guides students at every stage of their learning. From playful artistic discovery on the Lower Campus to mastering refined techniques and conceptual thinking on the Upper Campus, students continually gain new perspectives along the way.
