Sierra Canyon's student filmmakers are capturing prestigious honors for their exceptional blend of technical mastery and compelling, personally resonant storytelling.
On March 13, Stage Fright, last year’s Film III and IV production, was screened at Westflix, a highly competitive student film festival. The film’s creator, Dean G. ’26, who served as writer, director, editor, and cinematographer, also earned the award for Best Sound. The selection marks the first time a Sierra Canyon film has been included in the festival, making the recognition and award a milestone for the program.
Sierra Canyon will also be represented at the 2026 Open Mind Film Festival on April 26, a national showcase presented by the Friends of the Semel Institute that features student films centered on teen mental health and personal experience. Nominated for their work are two Sierra Canyon students, Emma B. ’26 and Hayley H. ’29.
In Emma’s film, Just the Two of Us, Nature and I, the emotional weight many teenagers experience takes center stage. Nature is presented almost as a companion rather than just a setting, allowing the film to reflect on how the outdoors can offer calm, balance, and perspective, while also underscoring the importance of protecting the environment. Hayley’s film, Uninvited Guests, was created in Film I as part of the Video Poem Project, an assignment designed to introduce students to Adobe Premiere and foundational sound recording techniques. While many students work from existing poems, Hayley wrote her own original piece, using the metaphor of guests occupying a house to represent anxiety and depression.
At Sierra Canyon, students analyze and produce sophisticated work through advanced study of camera work, performance, and editing. In doing so, they experience both the challenges and rewards of filmmaking, using cinema as a powerful medium for artistic and personal expression.
