We are proud to present a special feature in The Trailblazer: authentic stories told by the voices that make Sierra Canyon extraordinary—our students. Written by Trailblazers themselves, these articles capture the true spirit, innovation, and energy of Sierra Canyon through the eyes of those who live it every day.

The first-ever, student-run record label at Sierra Canyon is in the works, and the founders are looking to create a smash hit by learning from the pros.

The newly formed Trailblazer Records visited Universal Music Publishing Group headquarters in Santa Monica on September 30 to tour the world’s leading record label company. Mr. Chris Sampson introduced the students to a variety of music industry veterans — from marketing and tour managers to A&R (artists and repertoire) — integrating real-world music workspaces into the curriculum. The experience ties directly into what students are already doing in the classroom.

"Just like at a major label, Trailblazer Records is discussing who our key audiences are and how we can best reach them through creative marketing strategies," Sampson said.

Throughout the visit, the class had the opportunity to step into the offices and studios where artists like Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish, and Olivia Rodrigo make their chart-topping hits. It was a surreal experience for many students, as they had a chance to play in the studio and create music in the same space where major artists have worked.

Senior Kyra C. said what stood out most to her was learning just how many people contribute to the industry behind the scenes. From marketing teams to managers, she gained a new appreciation for the music business and how much strategy goes into shaping an artist's career.

“I really liked learning about the marketing aspects of the music industry and how you have to twist and turn to help artists," she said, reflecting on how creativity and business go ear-to-ear in the music world.

Sampson said that the next steps for Trailblazer Records involves even more collaboration with Sierra Canyon's digital art, video, and music performance programs. “We're starting to see students get inspired by the label," he added. "The growth ahead for the class and the label is significant."

With more hands-on opportunities like a trip to Universal Music headquarters, students are not just learning about the music business — they are becoming a part of it.
