This fall, Sierra Canyon students engaged in experiential learning through immersive programs that expanded the classroom curriculum into off-campus adventures.

At the Pali Institute, 5th Grade students applied science and arts concepts in the field with hands-on learning and personal connections to the natural world. They launched bottle rockets to investigate force and motion, painted nature-inspired scenes outdoors to refine observation skills, and practiced focus through archery. Students immersed themselves in team challenges that emphasized communication and collaboration, followed by an evening hike under clear skies that strengthened class connections.

Co-curricular trips are an important part of the Middle School curriculum. The 7th Grade travel to San Diego to experience the natural coastal beauty of the Pacific Ocean and participate in water and land activities at Camp Surf. Students practiced adaptability, teamwork, and marine safety with Positive Adventures facilitators. When rain arrived, they smoothly transitioned from outdoor activities to board games, warm tea, and trivia in the dining hall. Clear skies later welcomed team initiatives, sports on the sand, and a sandcastle challenge. The campfire, complete with s'mores and skits, provided a warm and memorable close to the experience.

On the 8th Grade Washington, D.C. trip, students participated in new and exciting experiences that will provide a context and a touchstone for their learning throughout this year and beyond. The program was led by Sierra Canyon history teachers, who guided discussions and created opportunities for exploration and learning. Visits to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Mount Vernon, the U.S. Capitol, and a night tour of national monuments deepened historical understanding. Simultaneously, time spent in Old Town Alexandria, exploring museums focused on African American history and the Revolutionary War, added meaningful context.

Experiential learning at Sierra Canyon transforms lessons into lived experiences, helping students build confidence, deepen their understanding, and see the world through a broader lens.
