Sierra Canyon observed Hispanic Heritage Month with campus-wide programming that blended learning with celebration.
At the Lower Campus, students gathered for an engaging assembly featuring a special video highlighting our community of Spanish speakers, a Spanish spelling bee, and a Latin dance demonstration that brought energy and excitement to the celebration. Seventeen students from 4th and 5th Grade competed by spelling out complete sentences that reflected Sierra Canyon's Big Four values of Honesty, Respect, Responsibility, and Kindness. Following the assembly, families enjoyed homemade pupusas provided by the Rodriguez Family (Ale '32, Michalis '35, and Leandros '37), a generous and delicious addition to the day's festivities.
Throughout the month, art and physical education lessons encouraged students to explore culture through creativity and play. In art, students created colorful works inspired by Salvadoran artist Fernando Llort. Meanwhile, PE classes featured traditional Latin American games such as La Mancha, Mar y Tierra, and El Pañuelo.
Collaboration between campuses enhanced the celebration as members of the Upper Campus Latino Student Union (LSU) visited Lower School classrooms to read stories that celebrate Hispanic identity and community. Books such as "Carmela Full of Wishes" by Matt de la Peña and "Pepe and the Parade" by Tracey Kyle sparked meaningful discussions and connections among younger students.
The month concluded with an Upper Campus assembly on October 27. Middle and Upper School students viewed a presentation led by LSU presidents Alexis O. '26, Sophia S. '26, and Paloma C. '26, including a student-produced video for the community. This was followed by a ballroom performance highlighting salsa.
Thank you to Spanish Specialist Señora Zurek, the PA DEI Committee, and parents Michelle Malinovitz (Jagger '33, Zuma '35, and Fox '37), Nicholas D'Ambra (Ben '27 and Charlotte '33), and the Rodriguez Family for their support and contributions to this year's Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.
