The annual 6th Grade Solar Car Race, a beloved Sierra Canyon tradition, showcased students' ingenuity as they tested their solar-powered vehicles in a lively outdoor competition.

In preparation for race day, students collaborated in small teams to design and build fully functional solar cars. Without using kits, each group created original blueprints and carefully selected materials with performance and efficiency in mind. As they measured and cut wood, researched wheel types, and assembled axles and bearings, students explored how engineering decisions impact speed and stability. They then constructed and wired electrical systems to integrate solar panels, conducting multiple test runs to fine-tune and optimize performance.

Held on the Lower Campus tennis courts beneath clear, sunny skies, the race drew an enthusiastic crowd eager to cheer on our young engineers. A wide range of innovative designs sped across the track, with many cars crossing the finish line at impressive speeds—demonstrating the strength of each group's engineering and teamwork. This hands-on project deepened students' understanding of renewable energy and sustainable power sources through real-world applications.

Well done, 6th Grade! From concept to finish line, your creativity and collaboration made this year's race one to remember!

Congratulations to our 2025 Solar Car Race winners:

1st Place – Pretty Paradise (Olivia M., Rylee B., and Rachel Q.)

2nd Place – Supa Hot Fire (Kade G. and Tru R.)

3rd Place – I Show Speed (Mikey T. and Max P.)

Experiential learning projects like this reflect Sierra Canyon's dynamic educational approach—where innovation, collaboration, and hands-on exploration ignite curiosity and empower the next generation of thinkers and creators.
