Sierra Canyon made a strong debut at the Calabasas Film Festival Student Showcase when Dean G. '26 earned the award for Best Editing for his film The Mighty Plains: A Joshua Tree Montage.
The showcase brought together local student filmmakers from Agoura High School, Chaminade, Oaks Christian, Sierra Canyon, and Viewpoint. Sierra Canyon was represented by Ozovehe, directed by Zahra B. '25, and Dean's award-winning The Mighty Plains. While Zahra, a YoungArts award recipient, is now continuing her film studies at NYU, both her project and Dean's demonstrated the strength and creativity of SC's Arts program.
Dean's inspiration for The Mighty Plains came during a trip to Joshua Tree National Park. "As I had always wanted to make a nature documentary-centered project, I realized it would be the perfect time to pull out the camera," he explained. Influenced by the style of 16mm film montages and the "Wes Anderson look," Dean created a nostalgic piece that combined vibrant colors, striking visuals, and carefully chosen soundtracks.
Reflecting on his journey, Dean credits the Arts program for encouraging him to grow as both a filmmaker and an artist. "Sierra Canyon has taught me the joy and value in expressing multiple mediums of art," he said. "I have been fortunate to explore cinematography, music, photography—always supported by wonderful individuals that motivate me to go further."
Dean's recognition at the Calabasas Film Festival underscores the meaningful opportunities available to students who pursue the arts at Sierra Canyon. With encouragement to take creative risks and the support to refine their craft, student filmmakers are discovering the joy and value of storytelling and sharing their voices with the broader community. Achievements such as Dean's award and Zahra B. '25's acceptance into NYU's Film program reflect a vibrant arts culture that celebrates creativity at every level.
