Sierra Canyon students celebrated World Languages Week from March 2–6, as five days of cultural activities, food, art, and language learning brought the School’s community together.
Upper Campus students sampled flavors from around the world throughout the week, enjoying Chinese and Brazilian treats, Argentinian empanadas, and freshly made French crêpes before closing the celebration with boba milk tea and mango sticky rice. Middle and Upper School students also tested their cultural knowledge in Language and Culture Trivia in the Library, where each division crowned its own winning team. Students explored creativity through hands-on experiences, including painting vibrant alebrije sculptures inspired by Mexican folk art and designing original mythological monsters inspired by legendary creatures from cultures around the world.
A highlight of the week came during Community Time, when Lower School students visited the Upper Campus for the fifth consecutive year to perform instrumental music and songs in a variety of languages, followed by a presentation of international short films.
The Lower Campus marked the week with a different cultural spotlight each day. Students celebrated Mandarin by learning phrases, receiving personalized calligraphy bookmarks, and even playing Rock, Paper, Scissors in the language. Students also participated in a Morse Code challenge, decoding clues to navigate campus. Art and global traditions took center stage throughout the week as students created a Holi-inspired collaborative mural by tossing paint onto a shared canvas. To celebrate Italian culture, students gathered on the Kindergarten quad for bocce ball and gelato, and the week wrapped up British-style with tea, crumpets, and cream-and-jam scones.
World Languages Week reflects Sierra Canyon’s belief that curiosity about other cultures is essential to meaningful learning. By immersing students in global perspectives and shared experiences throughout the week, the School continues to nurture a community where every background is celebrated, and every voice belongs.
A special thank you to Ms. Li, Mr. Freilich, Mr. Faulkner, Anita Ludlam (Thomas ‘28 and Louis ‘34), the Chinese Heritage Parents Association, and members of the PADEI committee for leading activities and helping bring World Languages Week to life across the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools.
