Lower Campus students marked Women's History Month with a series of heartfelt tributes across Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade, honoring trailblazing women whose legacies are woven into the fabric of our community.

The celebration began with our youngest Trailblazers, who paid tribute to Ellen Wang, the late wife of Sierra Canyon School founder Howard Wang and mother to Pre-KB assistant teacher Karen Sobel (Lindsay ’22 and Sarah ’27). Pre-Kindergarten students presented a beautifully designed poster to Mr. Wang and Mrs. Sobel, highlighting Ellen’s life, accomplishments, and meaningful history with the School, which she helped shape since its founding in 1978. The moment served as a touching reminder of the people whose love and dedication built the foundation of our community.

Kindergarten students welcomed Varsity Girls Volleyball Head Coach Stefanie Wigfall (Carter ’38), who shared her journey as both a coach and competitor. She gave students an up-close look at what it means to pursue excellence on and off the court, bringing the lesson to life by introducing the basics of volleyball and leading a spirited balloon game that energized the entire class. For many students, it was their first introduction to the sport—and a memorable one.

The month’s celebrations continued in 1st Grade with a visit from Olympic gold medalist and track and field legend Allyson Felix (Camryn ’37). Students arrived prepared, each holding a paper medal they had inscribed with words describing how Felix inspires them, which they presented to her in celebration of her remarkable career. Felix shared pieces of her journey, including an Olympic gold medal, relay batons, and footwear from Saysh, the athletic brand she founded. She spoke with students about perseverance, purpose, and what it means to build something of your own. The morning concluded on the Nikou Family Field, where Felix led the class in a relay race, giving them an unforgettable introduction to the sport she has helped define for a generation.

Across all three grades, this year’s Women’s History Month celebrations brought learning to life by connecting students directly with the people and stories behind their learning. From honoring a member of our founding family to learning from leaders within our own community and beyond, students saw firsthand that impact takes many forms—and that what is possible is often closer to home than they might imagine.
